In 1893, the United States Post Office Department made a significant breakthrough. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the New World, the U.S. issued a unique series of postage stamps: the Columbian Commemoratives.
This set of sixteen engraved designs was America's first commemorative stamp series. Printed by the American Bank Note Company for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, these stamps combined fine art with national storytelling.

A Journey Told in Ink: 1893 Columbian Commemoratives
Collectors admire the artistry of the Columbian series for its beauty and detailed narrative. Each stamp presents a chapter in Christopher Columbus's saga of discovering the New World, from the 1¢ issue to the $5 issue.
Here is the compelling story told through the 1893 Columbian Commemorative series:
1¢ (#230) – Columbus in Sight of Land: The moment of hopeful anticipation giving way to discovery.
2¢ (#231) – Landing of Columbus: The triumphant arrival on San Salvador.
2¢ (#231c) – Landing of Columbus (“Broken Hat”): A famed printing variety that brings excitement to collectors who spot it.
3¢ (#232) – Flagship of Columbus and 4¢ (#233) – Fleet of Columbus: Both honor the iconic ships of the voyage—the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María.
5¢ (#234) – Columbus Soliciting Aid from Isabella: The critical scene of persuasion that made the voyage possible.
6¢ (#235) – Columbus Welcomed at Barcelona and 8¢ (#236) – Columbus Restored to Favor: These stamps capture the grand welcome and Columbus's rehabilitation by the Spanish crown.
10¢ (#237) – Columbus Presenting Natives and 15¢ (#238) – Columbus Announcing His Discovery: Iconic episodes of exploration, now viewed through complex historical lenses by historians and collectors.
30¢ (#239) – Columbus at La Rábida: The quiet monastery that supported his ambitious plans.
50¢ (#240) – Recall of Columbus and $1 (#241) – Isabella Pledging Her Jewels: Scenes highlighting both the royal support and the personal sacrifice that funded the effort.
$2 (#242) – Columbus in Chains: A striking reminder of the trials and political struggles that accompanied his fame.
$3 (#243) – Columbus Describing Third Voyage: The explorer as a captivating storyteller.
$4 (#244) – Isabella and Columbus, and $5 (#245) – Columbus: These portraits complete the series. They set a definitive benchmark for classic U.S. issues.
The Legacy of the Columbians
For stamp collectors, these commemoratives hold a special place. They are milestones in American philately. The stamps represent a link to the late 19th-century enthusiasm for discovery, progress, and the World's Fair.
Whether you have a single stamp or a complete mint set, like the one shared here, you hold a piece of history. The real worth of the Columbian Series lies in the thread of connection it creates straight from the presses of 1893 to the collector's album today.
